Eames House/Case Study House No. 8

Summary: The Eames House is a landmark of modern architecture, built in 1949, that is located in Los Angeles. The house was built by Charles and Ray Eames to serve as their home and studio. The house was very well decorated, mostly of books, art objects and knick knacks. The design of the house was proposed as part of the Case Study House Program, by Charles and Ray. The house was chosen to be built on a 1.4 acre land that was once a part of Will Rogers' large estate. The design started out as a sketch of a steel and glass box and it was meant to be built with parts from steel fabricators. Ultimately, Charles and Ray changed the plan. to avoid disrupting the nice front yard. The new idea, had the house built sidelong with a 8 ft by 200 ft long concrete wall. Between all of the Case Study Houses, the Eames house is considered most successful architecture and living wise.

Needs of Client: The main need for this house was to give Charles and Ray Eames, a household for a young, married couple, looking for a place to live, work and entertain. The house was meant to be built for a couple, whose children had already moved out and it was meant to be peaceful with little, to no demands. The clients also wanted this house for a studio for art, and graphic design. This house began through the Arts and Architecture magazine, who was challenged to make a house to express a modern man's life. The house was eventually built, to satisfy the needs of Charles and Ray Eames, and they lived there for the rest of their lives.

Location of House: The Eames House, owned by Charles and Ray Eames is located at 203 North Chautauqua Boulevard in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles California. The Pacific Palisades neighborhood is a very rich area, with many older homes. Many of the houses in this neighborhood have a unique architecture and are built with modern materials. The house itself is located on a 1.4 acre lot that was once owned by Will Rogers, where his estate once stood. The house is built sidelong into the slope with a long concrete wall on the uphill. The house is located in a private area, away from other homes.
